Find The Needle Demo Guide (Steam App 5165210)
How to install the free Find The Needle demo, what the Steam demo build includes, what it leaves out, and whether progress carries into Early Access.
The Find The Needle demo is free on Steam under App ID 5165210. It is a separate app from the main game (5160800), so owning the demo does not buy the Early Access build, and uninstalling the demo does not affect the full game.
The demo is the best way to answer the only question that matters before November 6: does the shovel-sell-build loop actually feel good in your hands? This guide covers how to install it, what it contains, what it does not contain, and how to read the demo as a buying signal.
Based on the public Steam demo listing and Needless Games' Steam announcements as of November 2, 2026. The demo is a pre-release build; its content can change before launch. We do not claim to have completed the full Early Access game.

How to install the demo
- Open the Steam store page for App ID 5165210. You can find it from the demo button on the main game's store page.
- Select Download or Play Demo. Steam may label it “Download Demo” depending on your client version.
- Choose an install location. The demo is small compared with the full game, but leave room for shader cache and saves.
- Launch it from your Steam library under the demo section.
- If the demo does not appear, restart Steam and check that you are logged into the account you used to add it.
The demo is Windows-only, matching the main game. There is no macOS or Linux build. On a Steam Deck, you are running the Windows build through Proton, not a native version.
What the demo includes
The demo is a vertical slice of the opening loop. Based on the store page and the public build:
- the first-person haystack environment
- hand digging with the shovel
- hay collection and selling
- the early upgrade path
- a first look at the automation systems
- the needle-discovery moment
- the game's visual style and UI language
It is not a separate mini-game. It uses the same core systems as the main game, which is why it is a useful test rather than a marketing trailer.
Needless Games has released multiple demo builds; the current one is labelled Demo V8 in the Steam news feed. The studio has also said the demo reached #1 most played demo worldwide on Steam, after earlier appearances in the top 10, top 5 and top 3. That is a strong signal for a small indie simulation game, but it is a popularity signal, not a review score.
What the demo does not include
The store page does not publish a complete demo content list, so treat any specific “the demo ends at X” claim with suspicion. What we can say is that the demo is not the full 24-needle hunt, not the full 300+ upgrade tree, and not the Mountain pile's 30+ hour layout. Those are full-game features.
The demo also does not answer:
- whether demo saves transfer to the Early Access build
- whether demo achievements carry over
- whether the demo will remain available after launch
- how the late-game production chains are balanced
Needless Games has not confirmed save transfer. Do not assume your demo factory will survive into the paid game. If progression matters to you, wait for a developer statement rather than planning around it.
Demo vs full game: what changes
| Feature | Demo | Early Access |
|---|---|---|
| Haystack loop | Yes, opening slice | Full Standard and Mountain piles |
| Needles | A taste of the hunt | 24 total |
| Upgrade tree | Early portion | 300+ upgrades |
| Automation | First look | Belts, balers, scanners, robots, drones, paper machines, sorters, pipes, power |
| Products | Limited | Hay pulp, bales, eco bricks, paper, pellets, bioplastic, carbon fibre |
| Price | Free | Not announced |
| Platform | Windows | Windows |
The demo is a fair test of the game's feel. It is not a fair test of its long-term balance. A factory game can feel great for 45 minutes and become a spreadsheet with bad belt routing after 10 hours. The full-game pages on automation and money are written for that later stage.
How to get the most out of the demo
Do not rush the first sale. Pick up hay, sell it, and watch how the money changes your options. The demo is short enough that optimizing the first hour is the whole point.
Try one deliberate layout. Put the selling point near the pile, then see how much walking you do. The full game's conveyor system exists because that walk becomes the bottleneck.
Test the metal detector or scanner when you unlock it. The demo's job is to show you whether the detection loop is satisfying. If you find yourself ignoring the tool, that is useful information.
Play with the settings. The store lists 17 languages and full audio. Check the UI scale and mouse sensitivity before you judge the controls. First-person factory games live or die on camera comfort.
Stop when the loop repeats. You do not need to exhaust the demo. If the first repeated dig-sell-upgrade cycle already feels like a chore, the full game's larger numbers will not fix that.
Demo performance and crashes
The demo uses the same Vulkan-based renderer as the main game. The store lists a GTX 1050 Ti / RX 570 class GPU as the minimum, with 4 GB VRAM, and explicitly says integrated graphics are unsupported. If the demo crashes on launch, check your GPU driver first, then verify the Vulkan runtime.
Common demo issues and fixes:
- Black screen on launch: update the GPU driver; do not skip the Vulkan component.
- Low frame rate in the barn: lower shadow and post-processing settings before dropping resolution.
- Demo not appearing in library: search Steam for the demo app ID directly.
- Controller not detected: the store does not list controller support; try keyboard and mouse first.
- Save not found: the demo and main game use separate app IDs, so saves are not shared by default.
The demo is a pre-release build. Crashes are possible and are useful to report to the developer through the Steam community hub.
Is the demo still worth playing after launch?
Probably yes, if it remains available. It is free, short, and representative of the opening. But the full game is the actual product, and the demo may be updated or retired after Early Access begins. Check the store page before assuming it will stay.
If you are deciding whether to buy, the demo is the strongest evidence you can get without spending money. If you already know you want the factory systems, the release date page and price page are the next stops.
